Mike Owen ?
Family Man. Business Owner. Community Leader.
“I’m running for Auditor-Controller of El Dorado County to serve my home town community. My focus is to improve Accuracy, Efficiency and Visibility in the Financial Management of our County Government, while promoting a Positive, Accessible and Productive work environment.”
Mike Owen is one of our County’s home grown success stories. As a teenager, Mike earned Life Rank in Boy Scouts and varsity letters in football and baseball at El Dorado High School while working after school to earn money for college. After graduating from El Dorado High School in 1980, Mike attended Oregon State University where he dabbled in Journalism and wrote for the school newspaper, The Daily Barometer, before transferring to the University of Arizona where he earned his Bachelor of Science Degree in Accounting.
Mike and his wife Melissa married in Dec 1992. They started their family together four years later with the birth of their daughter Sophia while living in France where Mike was working as the Wireless Division Controller for VLSI Technologies. In 1999, their family grew once more with the birth of their daughter Madeline while living in Fremont, CA where Mike worked with numerous technology companies to improve their financial operations. And since returning to El Dorado County in 2006, Mike and Melissa have become proud parents of two well educated graduates from Ponderosa High School while working together to build their family business.
Mike has put his extensive skills to work in the corporate world of Silicon Valley where he worked on audits of major companies like Apple Computer, Cisco Systems, and Ford Aerospace as well as a successful initial public stock offerings for Oratec Interventions, a medical device manufacturing company, where he served as Corporate Controller and Director of Information Technology.
Mike is most proud of having led the financial efforts for the successful and on-time system conversion to Oracle at ESS Technologies, and working as the lead consultant responsible for developing and implementing a world-wide revenue audit for Cisco Systems to comply with complex Federal Sarbanes-Oxley Act regulations.
In 2006, Mike returned home to serve on the Economic Advisory Commission for El Dorado County and then as the Chief Financial Officer (CFO) of the El Dorado County Health Services Department in 2010.
Mike is a very active donor to numerous causes in El Dorado and Sacramento Counties and led the efforts to raise and distribute over $50K to residents affected by 2014’s King Fire. Today Mike Owen manages his thriving family business – Crystal Basin Cellars – in Camino, CA and is proud to support community families by providing a living wage in an economically depressed area of El Dorado County.
